Center for Health and Social Services of Gatineau (CSSS Gatineau)
By David Racico - Account Manager Videoconferece / Telehealth, Québec City
Situation Analysis
The client is Mr. Jean Bouchard of the Centre for Health and Social Services of Gatineau, close to Ottawa, Ontario. A nurse by profession, Mr. Bouchard is now responsible for the Nephrology wing of the project.
It all started when the client decided to accept tenders for his Nephrology needs. In the context of the call for tender, a meeting with the client was made possible to better understand his needs. During this meeting, we spoke of the creative solution we proposed for the Health and Social Services of Rivière Rouge, he had heard of it and wanted the same solution.
Meanwhile, the tender was not conceived with this solution in mind and our solution seamed unrealistic as it surpassed their budget. After numerous discussion with the client to explain the complexity of the project, as well as the eventual actions the nurses would face (changing the camera connections, choosing the right “outputs”), he finally decided to accept our project and to find more funding.
We were able to respond to his call to tender in this way. Since this project is Health related, we asked Bell for their assistance and they responded favorably.
Goal of the Project:
Allow the Nephrologist of the Gatineau Hospital to keep in touch with his patients who are situated at Maniwaki Hospital, over 90 minutes away from Gatineau.
Description of the Project:
In this project, the proposal included five rooms: 2 rooms for consultations (Nephrologists office), 2 boardrooms (training rooms) and 1 main room for the nephrology patients (includes 12 patient beds).
The two consultation rooms are equipped with the TANDBERG 1700 MXP system, which allows the nephrologist to have follow-ups directly from his office with a very compact videoconferencing system, all the while still having access to his personal computer which allows him to view the files of his patients.
The two conference rooms serve primarily for training as well as for group meetings. The proposed equipment is: a 65” flat screen installed on a wall mount and a TANDBERG Edge MXP videoconferencing system. The microphone suggested for these rooms are TANDBERG Audio Science microphones. This was suggested to improve the sound capturing capabilities during meetings. An interconnection box for the PC was proposed in order to have local presentation while on the videoconferencing system.
The main nephrology room at the Maniwaki Hospital has 11 patient beds. The challenge was that each patient should be able to see the monitors from their beds and be able to transform the screen into a videoconferencing system when a doctor needs to communicate with the patient. To arrive at this result, we installed at each bedside: a television on a platform support, a videoconferencing camera, a headset, an electrical outlet (for the headset, electronic stethoscope and one for the dermatological camera). We also installed a control system, which allows the doctors to select the patient they wish to speak with from his location. This system allows the doctor to personally select the order in which his patients are consulted. Lastly, we installed a surveillance monitor at the nurses station to permit them to see the patients individually.

Interactive Displays and Boards
By Robert Restoule - Senior Account manager, Ottawa
CBCI Telecom carries a variety of Interactive Touch Monitors from U-Touch, Sharp, Canvys and Qomo. These units are available as “all-in-one” versions which have an integrated touch surface, or as a “monitor + overlay” which allows the user to retrofit an existing large flat screen with a touch surface. Either of these varieties will allow control of the computer's mouse functions via the touch screen surface. If you add our Interact presentation software, annotation, notebook presentation and capture functions are added. Interactive desktop LCD displays with presentation software are available from Qomo, allowing a presenter to have a local view of their presentation along with annotation capability. Qomo also has interactive whiteboards available with the same presentation capability. All you add is a projector. Last, but not least, Mimio has a whiteboard capture device that allows pen strokes on a standard whiteboard to be captured to computer and printed.
