How to select a mobile internet stick?
By Patrick Morrison - Corporate Account manager, Atlantic Region

Mobile Internet Cards (Aircards as they used to be referred to) have been around for many years offering mobile workers the ability to access the internet from anywhere they could locate Digital Cellular service. However technology has also evolved and helped these people get wireless connectivity in the very popular locations they needed with the use of WiFi. New computers these days include built in WiFi capabilities and in addition to their own corporate environments, mobile workers can now access numerous WiFi hotspots everywhere from hotels and airports to coffee shops and in some cases, complete downtown cores. However, not all WiFi hot spots are FREE and they are not always found where you are. A Mobile Internet Card can often make for a very viable and affordable alternative. Some frequent users have even found that the money they save from accessing some WiFi hotspots has covered the entire monthly cost of operating a Mobile Internet Card.

So Which Model Do I Choose?
The first thing to consider when selecting a Mobile Internet Card is what type of computer you own. If your only concern is your laptop and it has a standard PCMCIA or Express Card slot, then a PCMCIA or Express Card Mobile Internet Card may be your obvious choice. However, some newer computers are no longer being built with these standard slots so then what do you do? Or what if you wanted to get a Mobile Internet Card that could also be shared amongst a number of coworkers and some have older PC’s with PCMCIA slots while some have these newer PCs without them? Or maybe you would also like to use your Mobile Internet Card on a desktop computer – especially that old one you were thinking of taking to the cottage. Or maybe you own a Mac. If any of these scenarios sound familiar, then your obvious choice should be one of the new USB modems instead.

The USB Modem (or Mobile Internet Stick as it is now called) offers the ultimate in flexibility as every computer has a USB slot. (Note: USB Type 2 slots are preferred in order for your computer to take full advantage of the speeds available from this type of modem) These modems can either plug directly to the PC’s USB slot but they also come with a short extension cable that allows you to relocate the modem in the event that a window ledge provides a little better signal that the surface of the desk you are working from. Some newer versions even come with a memory card slot which doubles the versatility of your modem making it also an external memory storage device as well.

Are They Difficult to Setup?

All Mobile Internet Cards come with a CD containing connection software that you install in your computer and a very simple step-by-step installation guide. Most users are operational within 10 minutes.

But How Much Do They Cost?

Mobile Internet Cards have never been more affordable with Bell Mobility currently offering them no charge with as little as a one year contract commitment. As for usage charges, Bell Mobility has responded recently with the one of the most attractive data plans ever – one that automatically adjusts itself each month to your varying usage habits and you never have to monitor it yourself.

Traveling Abroad Part 2: Antarctica and the South Pole
Telecommunication at the height of the world thanks to CBCI Telecom
By Jonathan Larocque - Satelite Sales Representative, Montreal

You like a challenge? Francois-Guy Thivierge has made a career out of it and his definition of “challenge” is considerably different than for the average person. An adventurer to the depth of his soul and an expert in climbing, Francois-Guy’s goals were to conquer the highest peeks of the seven continents. The Quebec City resident has already reached the summit of Aconcagua in Argentina, the Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Everest in Nepal and the Vinson in Antarctica. His next adventures are scheduled for McKinley in Alaska, Elbruz in Russia and to top it off the Carstensz-Felswand in New Guiney. For most, being able to successfully reach the summit of one of these peeks in a lifetime is a remarkable accomplishment. Francois Guy has realized these accomplishments in only 20 months!

Keeping in touch with those who live at sea level is essential for security and mental heath of a climber in the most remote areas of the word. Thanks to the communication advancements in technology in remote areas, CBCI Telecom helped Francois- Guy communicate with his family and the media to keep them updated on the journey through Antarctica. Equipped with a sophisticated telecommunication system, the athlete reached the summit of Mt Vinson and then laced on his cross country skies to unwind and reached the South Pole.
